    Safer Baby Wipes

    Safer Baby Wipes! Yippy!

Wipes! They are part of life these days even if you don’t have a baby. There are makeup remover wipes, toilet wipes, Clorox wipes… so many wipes, so many toxins! Yes, toxins. You would think something as precious as your face or your baby’s bottom would be treated with respect. However, for most manufacturers, the bottom line is the biggest consideration when creating a product, not your safety.

I remember being at the breaking point of my skin issues. My hands would actually get tiny little blisters all over them and itch uncontrollably. That was the first time I tried to make my own baby wipes. It was a fairly simple process however little did I know the ingredients I had on hand were probably contributing to my allergic reactions and not helping them. We all have varying degrees of allergies and intolerances however one of the worst issues, in my opinion, is the widespread use in the “natural” community of a preservative that actually leads to allergies and sensitivities. Seems like avoiding using that would be a no-brainer.

If you aren’t already aware of Methylisothiazolinone I would strongly caution you to be on the lookout and avoid it like the plague especially if you are using any “natural” products. It is generally used as a natural preservative and isn’t always listed on the label. It can be hidden in fragrances, or preservatives as well. One red flag is if you purchase an item that says it is preservative-free but has water as an ingredient something fishy is going on. Anytime water is used a preservative is required unless the item is refrigerated and has an expiration date. One way manufacturers get around this is to buy ingredients that are already preserved so they aren’t “adding” any preservatives.

So back to the baby wipes!

I recently got a trial of My Green Fills laundry detergent because making my own laundry detergent has gotten more complicated since my move. As I was poking around on their blog. I found this excellent recipe for baby wipes. I don’t have a baby of my own anymore but who doesn’t love having baby wipes around? I don’t even have paper towels anymore because Methylisothiazolinone can be used in that process as well plus using a Norwex cloth seems a lot more earth-friendly. However, for those times when a baby wipe is the best tool for the job here is a better solution…

    1. Roll of Bounty Paper Towels (or Linen Like Napkins)
    2. Container to hold your wipes (Be creative.. Upcycle!)
